Sudetendeutsches Museum

A (local) history of the Bohemian Lands

One of Munich's newest museums – the Sudetendeutsche Museum (Sudeten German Museum), opened only in October 2020, documents the lives of the German-speaking population in Bohemia, Moravia and Sudeten Silesia and their expulsion from these historic lands, which are now part of the Czech Republic.

Under the motto “Homeland!“, the permanent exhibition in the museum provides an insight into the time before 1945 with its cultural, religious and economic lifeworlds and also deals with the topics of flight and expulsion under the title “The End of Taking Things for granted“. The arduous new beginning and the integration of the Sudeten Germans are presented in the section “Homeland?“ – now with a question mark.

On a total of five levels, the museum tells the 1100-year history of the Sudeten Germans with a modern, digital and auditory concept. A very special exhibit is the world's longest motorbike of the Böhmerland brand.

Located on the high banks of the Isar River in Munich's Au district, the museum building designed by the architects of “pmp“ with its light sandstone façade is one of the new architectural highlights of the Bavarian capital.

Good to know: Every Thursday at 11 am, the museum offers an open guided tour of the permanent exhibition. (No registration required, no additional costs)
